In July of this year, a young woman who had been trafficked to China and sold for marriage escaped her captors and managed to contact the AIM China Rescues team for help. On July 16th, she was repatriated to Cambodia where our team met her at the airport in Phnom Penh and took her to file an official complaint with the local police before delivering her safely to her home. The young woman is now receiving assistance with finding work and other necessary services.
An investigation began to find the traffickers who had tricked her into going to China, and they were eventually located in the neighboring province of Kampong Cham. Following cooperation between the respective prosecutors and police, authorization was given to conduct the raid and arrest the suspects.
At around 6 PM on Tuesday, August 14th, AIM SWAT joined Officers of the Kampong Thom Anti-Human Trafficking and Juvenile Protection Police Department (AHTJPP) to arrest the two suspects on suspicion of having trafficked the young woman to China. Both have been charged with human trafficking related offenses.
