The young woman knocked at the door and waited.
The heat of the sun and long journey had worn down her weakened body. She leaned against the threshold and rested her hands on her swollen belly. The baby would come soon and all she had were the clothes on her back. She desperately needed help.
A man and his wife answered, smiling at the stranger. “Can we help you?”
“Yes,” she replied. “I have traveled very far and need a place to stay.”
“Come in. Tell us your story.”
Pich was from a rural province. She lived with her husband who cruelly abused her and abandoned her when he found out she was pregnant. She tried returning to her family but floods had wiped out their crops and they didn’t have enough food.
Desperate without work, she tried selling herself to a brothel. When the owner found out she was pregnant he turned her out.
Pich’s friend had heard of a pastor and his wife that helped people. “They are many kilometers away in a village called Svay Pak. Look for Rahab’s Outreach Center and someone will help you.”
That was how Pich ended up on the steps of the pastor’s home.
She had come to Svay Pak for help. Svay Pak — a place infamous for exploitation — had been her destination for rescue.
The pastor and his wife took Pich shopping for necessities and to the medical clinic for care. She was given a place to stay and her child is safe.
This season we remember Jesus who was born in a dirty stall for livestock. He did not have wealth or celebrity, but now His love and power are so famous the stories reached Pich and gave her hope.
We are celebrating this most precious gift of God, Jesus, who lived a humble, perfect life so He could redeem us all.
If you are empty, desperate, hurting, or lonely, knock on the door and Jesus will answer you. There’s enough grace and space for you.
Merry Christmas!
