Don Brewster’s Surprising NCU Commencement Speech

“ABOVE ALL ELSE, GUARD YOUR HEART, FOR EVERYTHING YOU DO FLOWS FROM IT.”

PROVERBS 4:23

AIM’s founder Don Brewster caught everyone by surprise on Saturday, May 4th at the Northwest Christian University graduation ceremony with his concise commencement speech.

I remember sitting in your seat many years ago and thinking, ‘who is this guy and who long is he going to talk?’” he teased as the graduating class and NCU staff chuckled in agreement.

While his short speech lasted no more than 5 or 6 minutes, Don’s words held a powerful impact for the young graduates about the importance of guarding their hearts as they go into the world and the exciting opportunities that await them. He warns the graduates, “There’s going to be a battle for your hearts. Day after day, that battle will intensify…” and urges them to remember the scripture shared above. “When that heart is guarded, God will do great things for you.”

A few attendees from the commencement shared with The Register-Guard that the brevity of what Don shared was well-received:

“It was complete, it was concise, it was on point.” – Aaron McCausland
“The commencement was probably the best I’ve ever been to.” – Megan Mallicoat

After his speech, Don humbly accepted an honorary Doctorate in Humanities as an alumni of NCU for the significance of his work and achievements through AIM.
